In those days a law degree was not required, so Matilda returned to Chicago, without a degree, passed the bar exam and began the practice of law. Decades later, as Columbia built a new law school building they were moving an old file cabinet and behind it, discovered a card showing she had indeed taken and passed the required course, and therefore should have been the first woman to graduate from Columbia Law School. Columbia had a Matilda Fenberg day and gave her the law degree, decades late.
